Al Khalifa Crafts and Design

Using the rich heritage of the historic Al Khalifa neighbourhood in Cairo as an economic resource, a design and crafts programme engages local artisans with designers to interpret their surroundings, upgrade their skills and link heritage with income generation.
Built Environment Collective – Megawra, a local NGO with experience in the Al Khalifa neighbourhood, engages young adults as cultural operators in organising public events to revive the cultural scene in the neighbourhood. Restored historic sites in Al Khalifa are used to exhibit and sell handicrafts and attract tourists.
Children from Al Khalifa participate in experiential summer camps, building their systemic reasoning, spatial awareness as well as self-esteem and pride. In the meantime, children from other networks and private schools are brought into the community for cultural awareness and exchange with their peers from Al Khalifa, promoting acceptance, diversity and respect among future generations.
