Hands on Wood

A women-led social enterprise in Upper Egypt represents a transformative model for economic and social empowerment of rural communities. Following a successful launch of the woodwork cluster and the creation of artisanal products by women, 120 craftswomen now earn a decent income and work within fair trade principles. Nearly a quarter of these women go on to secure management positions. This brand of artisanal wooden accessories and furniture is sold in local and international markets. The revenue generated from these sales sustains the project’s operations and further develops the training and employment of women. Thus, the women contribute to the local economy and to the alleviation of poverty for the entire household.
