City of the Dead

City of the Dead is inhabited by around 1.5 million people. The project aims at developing skills of young people and overall quality of life for the slum community in the heart of Old Cairo District.
The recently restored Qitbay complex will be utilised as a community centre to engage the young local population in various activities such as crafts development, computer skills and reading clubs. The community centre is a venue for holding cultural events, exhibitions and concerts to offer the local community access to the arts and culture and attract tourists into the neighbourhood.
With the aim of improving the economic conditions of the local population, a number of glass blowing and carpentry workshops are being upgraded to support local craftspeople to improve productivity and enhance the marketability of their products.
The Sultan Foundation, a recently developed non-governmental organisation, will engage the community leaders with the aim of developing capacities to manage the centre on their own and sustain the local community.
