Handicraft Academy

The partner SitatByoot has built up extensive experience in training for women in sewing, knitting and embroidery, predominantly in the form of easily accessible online courses. They will now apply this knowledge in the establishment of a tailored training academy that fulfils the needs of young women in low-income areas as well as those of buyers and employers in the textile industry. To this end, the partner will establish two vocational training centres (VTCs). These are aimed at raising the employability, technical skills and productivity of 1,000 young women through dedicated vocational training courses. The VTCs will offer sewing, knitting and embroidery courses through on-site training courses as well as online/distance learning. The trainees will also benefit from career counselling services. After graduating from the academy, the trainees will receive support from the partner as they pursue one or several of the following income-generating paths: starting their own home-based businesses, becoming part of the supply chain through accepting on-demand orders that can be fulfilled from home or at buyers’ workshops, or by seeking direct or indirect employment with industrial garment-making companies or smaller tailoring workshops.
