Young women in agriculture

With the fall in tourism in the Aswan region, the project offers an economic opportunity for young women to generate income and contribute to the overall well-being of their households.
By using the rooftops and backyards of houses to grow vegetables and other leafy plants, the women have access to home-grown, fresh, organic vegetables that they can either eat themselves or sell on the local market.
Around 720 families are engaged in the cultivation of these kitchen gardens using backyards and rooftops in West Aswan and Kom Ombo villages. The project partner collaborates with small local organisations in the selected locations to teach the young women how to produce and sell vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, beetroots, arugula, zucchini, aubergines and cauliflower. Moreover, a greenhouse in West Aswan ensures an ongoing supply of seedlings for the gardens.
